DIY Home Decor: Chalkboard from a Cabinet Door

diy chalkboard from cabinet doors

I’m loving my repurposed cabinet door chalkboard! We rent a house, so I thought I would never have the opportunity to work with old cabinets. I have no need to replace cabinets in a house that’s not mine, right.

Well, in our neighborhood someone put cabinet doors out by the trash and I snatched them up.  I realized I was finally going to be able to make my “Message Center” that I have been dying for. I asked the owner if I could take a few of the old cabinets.

I will later share with you, our “Message Center” wall with all of the other repurposed cabinets but for now we will begin with the chalkboard.

I love to write quotes so I knew our “Message Center” needed a chalkboard so I could easily change them up.

The quote on here is just to keep it real. Inspiring words like laugh, dream, believe and love need a down to earth word like fart.

Supplies:

  • Chalkboard paint ( I made my own)
  • cabinet door
  • Sand paper

1. I sanded the cabinet door some nothing major but just enough for the paint to stick.

2. Remove dust and start apply the chalkboard paint.

3. Let it dry and apply another coat if needed.

That’s it! Enjoy!

I would check yard sales, junk yards, or even contact your local cabinet shop makers who are replacing old ones for people. But you can also do it with formica it just involves more sanding and priming it here’s a link: http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/home/how-to-paint-formica-cabinets.htm

Thats a really great ideas. We have just spent a load of money on a boring old whiteboard for the kitchen. This would have been ideal!

Hi Linda, I just used matte black paint. I didn’t use special chalkboard paint. It works just the same.
