The scent of cinnamon is one of the aromas that whisks me away to my childhood.  I can see my mom stirring the Ponche (a festive punch around Navidad) and flipping the Buñuelos (crispy cinnamon sugar fried dough) in the kitchen. My brothers and I standing in the kitchen waiting for the first buñuelo to be ready, so we could fight over it. These nostalgic aromas remind me to share my culture, my heritage with my children!

So, for this holiday season, I got to making some cinnamon gingerbread men with my boys.  Once again, the aroma coming from the kitchen while I baked our gingerbread men reminded me of my mom. We talked about what an amazing cook their “lita” (short for abuelita) is and how we are going to enjoy some buñuelos this Christmas with her and lito.

The delightful aroma of cinnamon is definitely etched in my senses and has left me with lots of sweet memories. I’m always amazed by the power of different scents and how it takes me to different times and places from long ago.

Since I don’t always have time to whip up some ponche, I am thankful for the  Apple Cinnamon Cheer™ scent spray, that whisks me away to my childhood in a matter of seconds. It’s also perfect for when you’re having company
and didn’t have time to thoroughly clean the house.  I’ll share my secret with you—sweep the entrance
and the room you’ll spend the most time in and then spray your favorite Glade® Winter Collection scent.

Cinnamon Salt Dough Ornaments

Note my secret ingredient to making this naturally brown dough is the molasses.

  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 – 3 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1-2 tsp molasses
  • optional – cloves

  1. Put salt and 2 cups of flour in bowl.
  2. Add 1- 2 teaspoon of molasses to hot water. Mix water and flour. If it’s too sticky add the rest of the flour little by little until it’s not sticky.
  3. Roll out dough ball  and use cookie cutter to cut out gingerbread men.
  4. Use straw to make a hole for hanging.
  5. Lay ornaments out on a cookie sheet. Sprinkle with cinnamon and add cloves for eyes and buttons.
  6. Either let air dry for several days or for about an 1-2 hours at 200 degrees or so.
