The animals find Santa asleep in the woods and wonder if Christmas is coming early or not at all. Santa assured his friends that he has just been taking a snooze after a long hike. He was getting himself in shape for the big job on Christmas Eve. Then he shares the story of the first Christmas – the birth of the Christ child, thus helping his animal friends understand the true meaning of the holiday.
I love this story because it expresses the real meaning of the Christmas season and helps kids understand how Santa fits with the truth of Jesus Christ.
Part of our advent calendar activities has always been to share the story of St. Nicholas to explain to our kids the origins of Santa. My dad this for us as a child. I still remember him opening up the World Encyclopedia he worked so hard to get for our family.
So when my son was a bit older and started to put two and two together he asked if Santa is real. I responded with, “St. Nicholas is and that’s where Santa came from.”
