I recently started looking for milk alternatives for health reasons. But I do need to make sure that I get my calcium from somewhere else as that was the easiest form for me to get some calcium in my diet. Here where I live non-dairy milk is quite expensive so I’ve been exploring on how to make my own coconut milk, almond milk and now rice milk. I will share with you all three recipes in the near future.
Rice milk is one of the many popular alternative to non-dairy milk. It contains no cholesterol or saturated fat but it does contains about double the amount of carbohydrates therefore raising your blood sugar. So watch out if you’re a diabetic or if you’re trying to keep your blood sugar under control. It has a very low amount of protein so it may not be as satisfying compared to almond milk or coconut milk.
Homemade Rice Milk Recipe
- 1 cup of cooked rice
- 4 cups of warm water
- 2 tsp. vanilla
- optional: sweetener of your choice
1. Place your cup of rice and 2 cups of warm water in blender.
2. Blend and then add in your other 2 cps of water, vanilla and sweetener.
3. Let it sit for about 20 minutes and then strain rice liquid.
I use a metal mesh strainer and it works just fine for me but I have read that many people use a cheese cloth to strain the rice liquid out.
If you want thicker rice milk only use 3 cups of water.
