The other day I served up the boys french toast like this and they went wild. They were amazed by my creativity–it doesn’t take much to amaze little ones. Or maybe they were just amazed that I made french toast, I usually don’t.
These french toast kabobs are the perfect way to add a simple twist to a family breakfast favorite. I’m not really into french toast which is why I don’t make it very much but my husband’s family loves it. They pretty much eat it every day when we are visiting.
These kabobs are perfect for large groups–set up a station and have everyone fix their own. The fruit component also helps stretch the meal to feed more people, ideally.
French Toast Fruit Kabobs
ingredients:
- 1 bag of bread (we used whole wheat but I’ve heard that brioche is the best choice)
- 6 eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 tsp of vanilla or almond extract
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1 pint of strawberries
- bamboo skewers (we used small ones)
- maple syrup
- optional powdered sugar
1. Mix the eggs, milk, extract and cinnamon in a bowl.
2. Prepare your medium-large frying pan on medium – high heat. Once it’s hot add your butter to the pan.
3. You’ll need to have your bread ready to dip because you don’t want your butter to burn. Dip your bread in the egg mixture just as you would when making normal french toast.
4. At this point turn your heat to low-medium.
5. Turn your bread over and cook on both sides.
6. Once all of your egg mixture is used up take your cooked bread and cube it.
7. Set up a station with the bowls set out to make it easier to assemble: french toast cubes, optional powdered sugar to dip cubes in, skewers, chopped strawberries, other fruit if you’d like.
8. Thread fruit and bread through alternating until you’ve reached the top.
You can dip it in maple syrup or eat as is!
You can cube the bread before cooking it but for me it was easier to just flip one piece of bread and then cut it later.
