During this holiday season, one of the Mexican treats we enjoy are buñuelos, tamales, churros, champurrado which is Mexican hot chocolate. Most of these yummy treats take a lot of time to make, so I came up with this Mexican Inspired Waffle Bar so we can enjoy all of the cinnamon filled flavors of Mexico without all the work.

This Mexican inspired waffle concoctions are what bring this waffle bar gathering to another level! We have churro waffles sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar or plain waffles to start with. Then you can add any of the toppings to create Buñuelos waffles using the piloncillo syrup, or Mexican chocolate & cinnamon waffles using the cinnamon and chile ancho chocolate sauce, and Dulce de Leche Waffles using the creamy caramel.
Buñuelos waffles are the best! Buñuelos are sweet fritters that are dipped in a syrup. It’s a Christmas treat that you’ll find all over the streets of Mexico around the holidays and one of the things I looked forward to in our home at Navidad!
In our toppings bar I’ve included the Piloncillo sauce so our family could enjoy the flavors of Buñuelos without me having to slave over the kitchen for hours to make them.
Mexican Inspired Waffle Bar Toppings
Our decor was simple but intentional with the colors and the toppings bar. I used a chalkboard frame to let our family know what we had planned. Then on our chalkboard tray I made and I’m very proud of how it turned out. I wrote each of the toppings on it.
The toppings were really simple to make as you can see below in my instructions. Fun straws and napkins always add an extra touch to the main food table. I set glasses out for the family to enjoy Horchata with our waffles. Horchata is a rice drink with a hint of cinnamon! It falls under the category of “aguas frescas.” It’s so yummy!
- Churro Waffles – Cinnamon and sugar dipped waffles
- Dulce de Leche sauce – A Latino caramel sauce.
- Buñuelos Waffles – Piloncillo Syrup – Panela and cinnamon are what make this syrup amazing.
- Mexican Chocolate Waffles – You’ll need to melt chocolate and add chile ancho and cinnamon to it.
Waffles or pancakes are a weekend tradition in our home! It’s our time to connect and relax on the weekend. By adding a Mexican Inspired Topping Bar we’re able to add some of my cultures Christmas alegria {joy} to our regular family waffle tradition!
This is how we enjoy simple weekends during the holidays to connect during the busyness of the season. Nothing like good food for all to share in the “alegria” of the season!
