I love this craft because it’s a simple way the kids can get involved and learn a little bit of the Mexican paper art which can get as complex as Papel Picado. I have a simple tutorial here on Easy Papel Picado for the kids to make or you can add it as a fun simple decor to your party favors. For generations Mexicans have used paper as an art in many forms, paper flowers, paper mache crafts, papel picado and much more.

Here’s some interesting information on Papel Picado in art form: “Mexican tissue paper flowers traces its root in the art of “papel picado,” which dates back to pre-Hispanic times, according to Mexconnect.com. The Aztecs used tree bark to make rough paper fashioned into banners and flags, and decorated for use in rituals and celebrations. Crafters traditionally cut intricate patterns and even scenes from the Bible into the thick paper with scissors, knives, hammers and chisels. Papel picado decorations typically adorn windows.” ~EHow

Keep a stash of paper flowers in your party closet and pull as needed throughout the year. I do this because they’re so versatile and lots of easy and inexpensive decor to your event. I especially like the tissue paper flower pom pom balls.

How To Make Tissue Paper Flowers

Supplies:

Tissue paper
string
scissors

Style #1 Pom Pom Tissue Paper Flowers

Basically, for both flowers the Pom Pom Tissue Paper Flowers and the Traditional Flowers have the same steps shown above 1-5. But for the Pom Pom flowers you’ll shape the flowers on both sides and not have a flat side like you do with the traditional flowers.

1. Take about 8-12 sheets that are rectangle or square shape. The more sheets you use the fluffier it is. The larger the square/rectangle the bigger the over all ball will be.

2. Fold in accordion style.

3. Take a piece of ribbon or pipe cleaner and wrap it around the accordion to keep it together.

4. You can get fancy and shape the ends like I did. See the image above, I rounded the ends.

5. Separate each layer as shown above, pulling away from the end towards the center. Make sure to do it gently b/c it may easily tear.

6. Do this on BOTH sides and then shape your ball.

Traditional Tissue Paper Flowers Style #2

The difference in the traditional tissue paper flowers is that you don’t shape both sides. As shown in the #5 image above with the flat back is how you’ll leave it. Below is a picture of the flat Traditional Mexican Tissue Paper Flower in a vase!

1. Take about 8-12 sheets that are rectangle or square shape. The more sheets you use the fluffier it is. The larger the square/rectangle the bigger the over all ball will be.

2. Fold in accordion style. See image above Steps #1 and #2.

3. Take a piece of ribbon or pipe cleaner and wrap it around the accordion to keep it together. (image above Step #3)

4. You can get fancy and shape the ends like I did. See the image above in the pom pom tutorial (Step #4), I rounded the ends. But for this one I just left the ends as is.

5. Separate each layer as shown in the how to collage above, pulling away from the end towards the center. Make sure to do it gently b/c it may easily tear. (step #5)

6. Do this on both ends but just on ONE side, leave the back flat as shown below.
