DIY Yummy Conversation Hearts

DIY Yummy Conversation Hearts are not only delicious but easy to make.

IMG_1231

I love all the things you can do with conversation hearts: art projects, educational games and crafts. But one thing I don’t do is eat them in my opinion they aren’t tasty but this Conversation Heart recipe is yummy, soft and fun!

It’s really easy to make and perfect for little hands who like nibbling on “dough” because it doesn’t have eggs. My boys helped me make these. I especially love how my 2 year old is really getting into cooking with me. He wants to hop on the bar stool the minute he sees my other son helping me cook. I had two handsome little chefs helping me. The “dough” has a play dough texture so they really enjoyed rolling it out and making hearts, edible hearts.

We packed it up and my boys passed them out to their classmates.

Conversation Hearts Recipe

adapted from Candy Making for Kids

  • 1 1/4 tsp unflavored gelatin
  • 1/4 cp water
  • 1tsp light corn syrup
  • 1/4 tsp almond or vanilla extract
  • food coloring (your choice)
  • 4-5 cps of powdered sugar
  • edible markers
  • shortening

1. Place first 3 ingredients in a medium sized microwavable bowl or mixing bowl. Stir and place in microwave for 30 seconds.

2. Add extract and 5 drops of food coloring.

3. Add 1 cp of powdered sugar and mix. Continue adding sugar until you have reached 4 cps. If it’s still sticky add more. I let it sit their for 10 min after and it wasn’t as sticky.

4. Place dough on powdered sugar surface, roll out and use your heart shape cookie cutters. Sprinkle powder on rolling pin. I used shortening in my hands so the stickiness comes off easier. This is something I learned from making fondant.

Add your messages with the edible markers and let it dry. On some I just put candy hearts in the middle.

It will harden some but still have it’s soft texture. If you have some left over make sure you wrap it in plastic wrap and before kneading it rub some shortening on your hands to soften it up some. If you  leave it out it will harden and the have a cracked look to it.

DIY Valentine Party Favors

Packaging was made from fun paper and I used cellophane for the hearts.
