Spring rolls around early in South Carolina and the blooms were peaking their heads out as we enjoyed our little walk hand in hand.
My boyfriend at the time began sharing with me about this book that he was going through with his students, Bridge to Terabithia. He is not much of a talker, but that day he was full of a lot of rambling. As we walked and talked, his tone of voice started to change and he started to breathe faster. He seemed a bit frustrated, unable to express himself clearly. I just nodded and followed along. We stopped at the gazebo that overlooked the pond and he continued his thoughts about life. Then he began talking about how life is like a river with ups and downs and sometimes you don’t know what is going to happen. He shared all of this in a somber tone of voice. I really couldn’t tell where he was going with this, but it didn’t seem like it was going to end good.
The first thing that came to my mind was,
“Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh. He is going to do it. He is going to break up with me.”
I had broken up with him once a month for the two years we dated (I had issues) so if he did break up with me, I definitely deserved it.
I am a woman who speaks her mind, so the more he rambled I couldn’t contain myself and I finally blurted out”Are you breaking up with me?”
I should have kept my mouth shut for a just a minute longer.
Because those binding words of love were about to flow out of his mouth and fill the air with “happily ever after.” Ahhh, if I could only learn the art of speaking at the right time.
He didn’t let my question break his flow. He didn’t even reply or pause,
he finished his thoughts and got on one knee
and with tears in his eyes and a confident and peaceful tone of voice he said
“Will you marry me?”
I did say “YES.” Though the proposal was still romantic and beautiful, I wish I would have kept that comment to myself. Well, it does make for an interesting proposal story. We just celebrated our 9 year anniversary!
