I’ve been dying to share this post with you but most of all I can’t wait to share this Summer Vacation Countdown activity with our kids.  We finally get to take our summer furlough after 3 years of patiently waiting and saving. So needless to say, we are so very excited!

We’ve been studying in U.S. history with my homeschooler son, about the birth of our country: 13 colonies, found fathers, U.S. constitution… you know all of the foundational history on how America was started. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reviewing our founding fathers and my son surprisingly enough has not just loved learning this topic but also asked if we could go to Washington D.C. one day.

It’s on his bucket list in this order: Legoland, Disney World and then Washington D.C. So in the midst of trying to figure out our summer vacation plans it dawned on me, we HAVE to go to Washington D.C.  This would be an epic homeschool field trip for my son. It’s not in our budget to go to both Legoland and Disney World so we chose Legoland. I wrote here why it was the best decision we made and why we picked Legoland over Disney World.

I’ve been brainstorming on how to let our kids know about our summer vacation plans.  And I came up with this fun idea that I’m going to let you in on so you can try it at home: our little summer countdown activity and dinner.

But shhhh, don’t tell my kids it’s still a secret.

Summer Vacation Countdown Family Dinner & Activity!

1. Set the ambiance! Our family is planning a more patriotic feel for our meal since we are letting our kids know about our Washington D.C. trip to explore our American heritage.

Or you can go with decorating with balloons and give them a summer bucket full of fun stuff they’ll use over the summer. All the fun details for this are here. Nothing like creating anticipation to get us excited!

2. Come up with a fun meal! For the meal hop on over to your Walmart store and pick out some of your favorite summer foods.  I usually save myself tons of time on parties and other fun meals by purchasing low prep food you know delicious frozen food that’s freshly made, but simple food.

I had my friend help me out with the shopping and here are some of the items she grabbed. Nothing like an easy meal with Stouffers Garlic Chicken Skillet Dinner.

And of course you have to end your “summer” meal with ice cream, Edy’s Fruit & Veggie bars!

3. Summer Vacation Countdown FREE Printable- You’ll need to print out this super cute Summer vacation countdown.  Print it out and laminate it (we “laminate” using contact paper, it’s cheaper and works just the same) you can use a dry erase marker and change it up each day.
