Edible Science: Spider Web Snack

Edible Science: Spider Web Snack

edible spider web

Easy fun snacks totally make my day and my kids day.  We’re studying spiders in science so I made these with my boys.  I didn’t go into too much detail for the spider’s body in our snack so it doesn’t have 8 legs or 8 eyes but the kids were very aware of the fun spider facts below.

We did discover some fun spider facts:

  • Spiders are not insects they are arachnids.
  • Spider webs are sticky.
  • Spiders eat insects like mosquitoes, flies, bugs, crickets.
  • Spider webs are REALLY strong.
  • Spiders don’t have ears or noses.
  • Spiders can have between 4- 8 eyes but still can’t see very well.
  • This was interesting–not all spiders spin webs but all produce silk.
  • Most spiders don’t bite. That find was truly surprising since we have lots of little spiders in our house and I thought they were biting our kiddos at night, leaving tiny little bites all over their body. (I found this info. here)

Here are some fun videos and great links for kids of all ages.

Spider Facts for Kids

The book –The Diary of a Spider by Doreen Cronin on video.

This video from Mocomag Kids is great and full of facts but you read them so it’s for older kids who can read.

This video from All Things Animal is for kids of all ages, my 3 boys between ages of 3-10 watched it and it kept their attention.

The great thing about this snack is that when building the web you can talk to the kids about how sticky it is and drop sprinkles on it or other things to show the kids that is how the flies trap their prey.

These also make Halloween party or classroom snacks.

Ingredients:

  • melted white chocolate
  • pretzel sticks
  • raisins
  • wax paper

Take a piece of the wax paper and lay it out in front of you. I made mine big because I had all 3 of my boys making it with me.  This was actually a pivotal step that I left out when I made a sample one and it didn’t work because I used a napkin and it just stuck to it.

Then shape your pretzels into a star looking shape.  The main thing here is that they are all touching in the center.

Finally, take your melted white chocolate (I just heat water in a pot and place a pyrex glass bowl over it to melt it) and either pipe it into a baggie or just use a spoon. We just used a spoon. If we did it again I would pipe it so that my 3 year old could have done more of the web decorating.

Place the raisin on the web to represent the spider.

Enjoy!
